During the twenty-third session of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee held in Morocco from 29 November - 4 December 1999 a decision was taken to inscribe the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park on the World Heritage List of Cultural properties "of outstanding universal value".

This is a signal honour for the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, for the Government and people of St. Christopher ( St. Kitts ) and Nevis, and for the entire Caribbean. It is indeed, an acknowledgement of the historical and cultural importance of the relatively small islands of the Eastern Caribbean.

To commemorate this inscription, the Government of St. Christopher and Nevis, in collaboration with the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, hosted a Symposium and Inscription Ceremony in St. Kitts on 3 and 4 October 2000.
